Arnold Phillip Shortman is a 9-year-old boy who is wise beyond his years. He always tries to see the best in people and do the right thing. He lives with his grandparents, Phil and Gertrude, in the Sunset Arms boarding house. Arnold is known for helping those in trouble, and acts as a stable center for his friends and "family". Throughout the series, Arnold has two major crushes and a complicated relationship with Helga Pataki. Helga is secretly in love with Arnold and frequently bullies him to hide her true feelings. Eventually, in Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, Arnold returns Helga's feelings with a kiss after she helps him find his parents and save them from a sleeping sickness. It is implied that they become a couple. Arnold's best friend is Gerald Johanssen, and he is friends with most of his fellow fourth-graders.
