About Ash Ketchum
Ash Ketchum, also known as Satoshi in Japan, is a character in the Pokémon franchise and the protagonist of the Pokémon anime for the first 25 seasons. Voiced by Rica Matsumoto in the Japanese version and Veronica Taylor and Sarah Natochenny in the English dub, Ash is a young man who travels with various companions in pursuit of his dream to become a Pokémon Master. His lineup of Pokémon constantly changes, with Pikachu being his only consistent companion. The character was designed by Atsuko Nishida and named after Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri, reflecting Tajiri's childhood fascination with catching bugs. During localization for North American audiences, the character's name was changed to "Ash Ketchum" to tie into the series tagline "Gotta catch 'em all!" and be loosely based on the player character Red from the Pokémon Red and Blue games. Tajiri has stated that Ash represents the 'human aspect' of the series and reflects his own childhood experiences.
