Morty Smith Sr. is a fictional character from the American animated TV show Rick and Morty. Voiced by Justin Roiland in the first six seasons and then by Harry Belden in the seventh season, Morty is a 14-year-old boy with a personality resembling Marty McFly from Back to the Future. He is the grandson of Rick Sanchez, the son of Jerry and Beth Smith, the younger brother of Summer Smith, and the father of Morty Jr. and Naruto Smith. Morty is characterized as awkward, anxious, and having low self-esteem. Despite his good nature, he can be easily manipulated and second-guesses himself often. In promotional material for the show, Morty has been portrayed by actor Jaeden Martell. In plotlines, Morty's moral outrage becomes a driving force, often leading to unexpected consequences and even acts of violence. According to commentary by Corey Plante of Inverse, Morty's struggles with morality and his actions often contrast with the nihilism displayed by his grandfather, Rick. Even though Morty aims to do the right thing, his interventions sometimes lead to catastrophe, such as in an episode where he rescues a being only to be forced to kill it after discovering its destructive intentions.
