Tolkien Black, originally known as Token, is a character from the animated show South Park, voiced by Trey Parker and later Adrien Beard. He is the only black child in the town until the introduction of another black character in a later season. In the 25th season, it is revealed that his first name is actually "Tolkien" after J. R. R. Tolkien, though he expresses dislike for his namesake's work in an episode. Episodes in which Tolkien plays a major role often deal with issues of race and ethnicity. In one episode, he becomes self-conscious over being the wealthiest kid in class and tries to remedy it by inviting other wealthy black families to town. He ultimately learns that his classmates make fun of each other for various reasons, not just because they do not like him. In another episode, Tolkien reluctantly accepts an apology from a classmate after a racial slur is used on live television, acknowledging that the classmate will never truly understand how it feels for a black person to hear that word.
