He is depicted as materialistic, snobbish, and arrogant, with a rude and superior attitude towards his neighbors. Despite this, Kahn secretly seeks approval and friendship from those around him. He immigrated to Anaheim, California from Laos before moving to Arlen due to problems with his previous neighbors. Kahn's biggest dream is to surpass his successful neighbor, Ted Wassanasong. He has a history of job failures due to his attitude, leading his family to move around the United States. He previously worked for a defense contractor but was fired for spilling company secrets. Kahn also commutes for work, as his new job in Houston has forced him to relocate. He is a trained martial artist and has a brother living in the U.S. with his own family. Throughout the series, it is revealed that Kahn suffers from bipolar disorder, which causes him to switch between being brilliant and likable when taking his medication, and being a miserable jerk when he's not. His backstory includes his rebel and playboy past, and it is shown that he was chosen by his wife over the intellectual man her father had set her up with. Despite his flaws, Kahn's neighbors show acceptance and forgiveness towards him.
